Writers’ & Artists’ blog: house rules

The Writers’ & Artists’ blog is a lively, fun and informative place, and we are keen to encourage comments and conversation from all our visitors.

To keep the blog a safe and pleasant place to visit, we ask you as a term of service to abide by our house rules. If you have any queries, or you would like to report any comment that you feel breaches these rules, please get in touch.

General commenting rules

  • You are welcome to comment on any open blog post, whether or not you are a registered user of the site.
  • All comments are moderated. We reserve the right not to publish a comment, for any reason – although we aim to ensure that all comments that comply with our house rules are published.
  • The Writers’ & Artists’ blog is for all visitors to enjoy, so please be respectful when you comment. If you disagree with a blogger or another commenter, be constructive in your criticism and do not make personal attacks.
  • We forbid illegal or distasteful content, including pornography, nudity, bigotry, racism, the posting of copyrighted material and spam comments. These will be deleted, and any illegal material reported to the police.
  • Please don’t post adverts. If you’d like to tell us about services, books, websites or products that you think would interest our readers, then please contact us directly.
  • Keep it snappy. Long, rambling comments will rarely be published. As a rule of thumb, try to keep comments under 200 words.
  • Don’t swear. English is the richest language in the world. Choose some other words instead.
  • Say it once. Don’t post duplicate comments.
  • Stay on topic. Write a comment related to the post.
  • Keep it private. Never post personal details like your email address or telephone number. The web is a big place, and it’s just not safe.

Queries

  • Our blog is designed to inform and to encourage discussion. We do not provide an advisory service, and while we try to respond to queries we cannot guarantee that we will do so.

Posting stories, poems and original material

  • On the whole, comments are not the best place to post your original work. However, if a short excerpt is relevant to the discussion, please ensure that you own the full copyright to the material you post.

Posting images and links

  • Think before you link. If you add a link to an external website, please ensure it is relevant to the topic in question. If it isn’t, we may rule that your comment is spam or an advertisement, and we won’t publish it. Links are subject to the same content rules as comments.
  • Don’t post images within comments. They will not be published. If you wish to share an image with our readers, contact us directly and we will review it.
  • Gravatars. If you choose to use a personal gravatar when you comment, please ensure that it does not contain any offensive, illegal or copyrighted images.

Note: We reserve the right to delete any comment or ban any user at any time for any reason. So, please enjoy our blog safely and use it considerately. We look forward to reading your comments.
