Maybe it's a dumb question but does age really matter? I'm 17 and I've been told that I'm too young..

Is it ready to send now/soon? If so, and that is the dream, send it out. Why talk of dreams being sent to the dumpster. No one here can prevent you from succeeding or wants to., but nor can they make it happen.

You don't need to mention your age in enquiry, it is the work they will say yes to or not say yes to in the first instance. Talk to a helpful English teacher perhaps, ask them to look at it with you. Send off a letter, three chapters and a synopsis and see. Maybe you will hit bulls eye and if not, then you tried, and at least you won't have to think 'what if'.

Child prodigies have been known before, much younger, but I doubt it would happen now, except by self publishing.
