'What if' is one of the most important questions you can ask yourself as a writer. Try out these writing prompts from Linda Strachan's Guide to Writing for Children & YA

Guide to Writing for Children & YA

Play around with the two writing prompts below and see what you can come up with!

Take an ordinary occurrence, such as opening a school bag, and ask yourself what if…?

It can be something that might happen in real life or be completely imaginary.

What if …you came home from school and opened your school  bag to discover your new mobile phone had turned into an unexploded bomb, and your weird new friend seemed to know too much about it?

Would you end up on a secret mission to save the world?

What if …you’ve been at the museum and some rare artefact is in your bag when you open it. Who put it there?

Does it have secret powers? Was a thief hoping to steal your bag to get the artefact back, which means you could be in danger?

Set a timer for ten minutes and see what you can come up with.
