On Managing Editors
'Managing editors are the hidden power behind a book. We are there to make sure the books get made. A commissioning editor is the one who gets a book and decides that it should become a book. But then once they're done with it, they hand it over to us to make sure that it actually gets printed and then gets into a shop. So a managing editor runs everything behind the scenes.'
Making Magic
'The role of an editor is often giving feedback to an editor and this is a really important part of the job. You have to help them make the text the best it can be, that their story is the way they want to tell it, and also the story is what the publishing house thought we were publishing. We always want to make sure that the vision of the author and the publishing house align, because that's when we make magic.'
Editor Skills
'The best kind of editor is curious and engaged. You need to be looking around you, seeing what's happening, seeing what stories need to be told. You need to be reading a book and asking yourself 'What's going to make this book better? What's going to make this book the best it can be?''
