This is the final time you’ll be blogging for us before it’s all over. How are you feeling?
Good! I’m tired and ill too, but I’m so close to finishing now. Blogging for Writers and Artists has been great. It’s been one of the things that’s kept me on track this month. Nothing like accountability to keep your nose clean!
Word count:
At the time of writing: 42,000ish words. Sooo close!
Your biggest triumph this week:
Writing two scenes I’d been waiting to write since planning this story AND hitting 40,000 words in the process. I felt like the remaining 10k would be a breeze in comparison.
And the bit that has made words harder to come by:
I came down with a chest cold and took two days off writing to sleep. That sucked but was necessary; my head felt too foggy to concentrate. Despite that, this week has been considerably quiet and okay. The words have kept coming, even though they’re not as inspired or fresh as the first week.
Talk to us about your ending. Are you excited to be writing it? What’s the biggest challenge you think you’re going to need to overcome to get there?
I’m very excited to be writing the ending. Who wouldn’t be? It means the first draft is done!
My biggest challenge will be making the ending meaningful without being corny or cheesy. This is the end of the trip, and Jay and Mira have had quite an emotional and physical journey over this story. There's still one final goodbye to make though, and I really don't want it to be cliched.
The ending won’t require the 8k words I still have to write. I do occasional revisions of previous sections and I know the rest of the novel needs bulking out in places, so that’s what will get the word count up. Also I’ve noticed an increasing reliance on dialogue and that’s definitely something I have to curb in the final stretch. I have complete faith that I’ll finish with over 50k, but it won’t be as pretty and cohesive as I’d like.
Hopes for next week:
That the first draft isn’t entirely terrible when I finish (it will be). That celebratory drinks will taste extra special out of this tankard. The writing says 'Nanowrimo 2013: Each draft is better than the last'. Rhiannon and I have matching ones because we’re that dedicated to this.
NaNo in a nutshell (week three):
The light at the end of the tunnel.
Thanks guys! Rhiannon and I ordered ours from here: http://www.tankardstore.com/
The one we both chose was a traditional tankard: http://www.tankardstore.com/detail.asp?productId=251&categoryId=28 and we had them custom engraved. The Nanowrimo store doesn't do these. I think they're missing a gap in the market.
Love your word count graphic. I'm with Christopher, where can I get one of those tankards?
I want one of those tankards - it'll go so nicely with the ones I have for my Christening and eighteenth birthday! If I get one, it will end up dented and unpolished - like the other two - but what's the point in a tankard you don't use for getting absurdly drunk?
