Bloomsbury Academic Writing Fellowship 2024: Terms and Conditions

Entering the Competition 

1. No purchase necessary, but entrants must be registered on www.writersandartists.co.uk.

2. The competition is open to anyone who identifies as Black African, Black British, Black Welsh, or African Caribbean.

3. You must be at least 18 years old to enter and live in the UK.

4. You must have a manuscript in progress on one of the relevant United Nations Sustainable Development goals or cover a key thematic topic from across the Humanities and Social Sciences such as: Gender and sexuality; Economics and international development; Social welfare, society and communities; Politics, current affairs and government; Equality and diversity; Climate and environment; History and cultural heritage; Popular culture and media; Literary studies

5. All entries must be original, unagented and unpublished. As this is a development award, we appreciate entrants may have submitted part of their work to other similar development prizes.

6. Writers may submit one entry only.

7. All entries must be non-fiction and must be written in English.

8. Employees of Bloomsbury, and members of their immediate family, are excluded from applying for the Fellowship.

 

Submission Rules 

9. Entries must be submitted via our website portal (https://www.writersandartists.co.uk/bloomsbury-academic-writing-fellowship-2024) and this will be open from September 16th at 9am.

10. Please include your email address and other contact details on the form. Your entry must be sent in a Word/PDF attachment. As long as it is clear and easy to read, we have no other formatting requirements.

11. Your entry must be submitted before 23:59pm UK time on 10th November 2024. Entries will not be accepted after this date.

12. Bloomsbury cannot accept responsibility for entries which are not received or which are received after the closing date due to technical failure or for any other reason.

 

Assessing the Submissions and personal data

13. All submissions will be seen by our Fellowship panel who will read and assess all entries as to whether they meet the criteria set out above and also for the academic rigour and structure of the content.

14. We will process your data in accordance with our Privacy Policy. By participating in the Fellowship, you hereby agree to our collection and usage of your personal data and acknowledge that you have read and accepted our privacy policy.

15. Any application data exported from the W&A website to the panellists will only be identified with the applicant's user ID. The admin team for the Fellowship will have access to the full information, via the W&A website, but the panel members will not.

16. All personal data will be deleted from the Bloomsbury network within a reasonable period.

 

Prizes 

18. The recipient of the Fellowship will benefit from invaluable, industry-standard creative support as they develop their project, with the ultimate aim being that the author is in a position to approach appropriate publishers.

19. The Fellow will also receive £1,000 of financial support, £250 worth of titles from Bloomsbury Academic, plus event and networking opportunities. Full details are on our website: https://www.writersandartists.co.uk/bloomsbury-academic-writing-fellowship-2024.

20. Two Runners Up will each receive £250 worth of free books from Bloomsbury and free attendance at relevant masterclasses organised by Writers & Artists.

21. The winner of the Fellowship and the two runners-up will be notified in December 2024.

22. The Fellowship award cannot be exchanged for the monetary equivalent.

23. The decision of the Fellowship panel will be final and no correspondence will be entered into.

24. There is no obligation on Bloomsbury to publish the final manuscript, but will offer relevant editorial advice relating to publication options.

25. The recipient of the Fellowship should expect their first mentoring meeting to take place within three months of being announced. Writers & Artists will work with the Fellow to organise dates, travel and all other logistics.

 

Other Important Information

26. Bloomsbury reserves the right to change the Fellowship award without notice.

27. All entrants will be contacted at the email address supplied in their entries. Keep an eye on www.writersandartists.co.uk and / or sign up for the W&A newsletter via the site to keep up to date with news and advice articles linked to the Fellowship.

28. Entrants will retain copyright of their entries, although we may wish to use an extract from submissions by the winning fellow and two runners-up as part of our marketing and PR campaigns. We will get permission and agree the wording of the extract from before using it.

30. We reserve the right: i) to disqualify any entrant whose conduct is contrary to the spirit of the rules or the intention of the Fellowship, ii) to declare as void any or all of their claims or entries based on such conduct, as well as any claims or entries resulting from any printing, production and/or errors, and iii) at any time to cancel, void, amend, modify or supersede the Fellowship if circumstances make this necessary.

31. We exclude liability to the full extent permitted by law for any loss, damage, liability, disappointment or injury suffered by an entrant as a result of application for the Fellowship or occurring to the winner(s) arising from their acceptance of a prize.

32. Nothing shall exclude our liability for death, personal injury, fraud or fraudulent misrepresentation as a result of our negligence. If any provision of these terms is invalid or unenforceable, that provision to the extent required shall be deemed to be deleted and the validity and enforceability of the other provisions shall not be affected.

33. This Fellowship and any dispute arising out of or in connection with it shall be governed by and construed in accordance with the laws of England and Wales, and the parties hereby agree that the courts of England and Wales shall have exclusive jurisdiction.
