Hi folks
New to the boards and posting my first question. I've started a short story where I think changing the viewpoint of the story from one character to another would be appropriate. How would you suggest I format this? One suggestion I had was having a few asterisks between the paragraphs with the different viewpoints.
Has anyone else done this with their own work?
Thanks
The competition I'll be aiming for is fairly open in terms of genre/style but yes I'll be careful not to stray too far from standard preferences.
I've seen this change of viewpoint done in a short story before that placed in a competition so I suppose it's possible as long as I ensure it still flows and is not confusing.
I'll give it more thought. I like your suggestion Katie. I'll keep it in mind. Do you dabble in scriptwriting? I just wondered with your mentioning the three act structure...
I would be wary of changing character viewpoints in short stories too.
Why not use dialogue and have chunks of monologue rather than narrative?
If you had to change then maybe keep it within the three act structure
first character
second character
first character
that might help to keep the flow
Oooh is it for a competition? I don't want to backtrack on my rebel status ;) but I would say that as long as you are working within the criteria of that particular competition then go for it!
