Do you need a writing qualification?

Hello everyone - first discussion here!

I was wondering what your thoughts on writing qualifications are.

I am just starting out and don't have any specific writing qualifications (except an English GCSE!).

Is it worth looking at courses? If so, where do I start?

Thanks in advance!

I'd almost say the opposite. Formal writing qualifications can lead to formulaic writing. There are some literary agents who can spot an MA in literature within a page of reading. However, I've found that short courses from course leaders with diverse backgrounds can be inspiring, informative and really challenge you. Try your local college/university for short courses. Many of them run adult education short courses and most have some creative writing or short story courses. I've done three courses with the University of Cardiff and the Park Writers course here in Cardiff. I've found on-going friendships from these courses and those friends encourage me to keep going. You never know when you might need that sort of encouragement.

Hi Kitty.

If you mean do you need a writing qualification to write a story, then no you don't. If you're having a go at writing one for the first time, just go for it and enjoy it. Look into the "details" later. You'll get tons of advice online, as well as on this site. Have a look and see the consistent ones. Read interviews with some writers.

Regarding courses - I can't really comment as I haven't done any formal writing training. I'd suggest writing a few first and looking into courses later.
