How many agents?

I've just gone through the Writers and Artist Yearbook and have come away with about twenty agents, who are suitable for my work. My question is, is this too many? Should I be even more selective? Should I actually have a budget because posting to all twenty will not be cheap? Will be interested to hear from writers who have approached agents.

Many thanks.

I would prioritise - but 20 doesn't sound like an unreasonable amount.

My advice though is to do your homework, don't send the same letter out to all twenty, make sure you reference the agent you're sending it to so they know why you've chosen them.

I have to admit I totally agree with Louise's answer. Louise I'm sure you'll find someone soon.

I have not sent anything to agents yet, but I would send to the ones who are closer to the town I live in (If there isn't any in the same town) then if they reject, try the ones not so close.
