Opinions of Kindle Direct Publishing?

Hello fellow scribblers,

I've got a collection of poetry on Kindle at the moment (as a water-tester for the possible future), and it seems to be doing alright (not amazing, but well enough), and I was wondering what other W&A members thought to KDP publishing?

It is still my ambition to have a book published that I can hold in my hands and turn the pages of, so I have to say my impression of KDP is 'fun' at the moment!

I'm thinking of trying Smashwords soon, too.

I agree, it's very motivational seeing your book sell and what people think of your work. I'm working on some more poetry alongside my novel to see if having more than one book makes any difference...

Work in progress!

Love it!! It's so easy to do and I have sold nearly 700 copies of my book (The 13th Doorway) since the start of January. I am doing well in the charts and it's very motivational!! :)

My self-pub is on KDP (though it was originally published as a paperback).

I actually tried Smashwords first, as they convert your file for a wide number of eReaders. It just helped me get into the swing of varying document formatting to match their requirements. And that was the most time-consuming bit. The rest of the process was straightforward - apart from subsequently playing around with the pricing so it attracted buyers.

It seems to me if you write crime or horror (or erotica) you'll likely sell loads. If not you need to be well known or promote like crazy to do any volume.
