Using Song Titles & Artists' Names

by Adrian Young
18th March 2021

I am currently writing a book about my favorite artists and bands. I will be mentioning many song titles and band names. I will not be quoting any song titles and there will be nothing negative about any of the songs or artists.

Where do I stand from a legal/copyright point of view in the UK?

Thank you.

Hi Adrian,

I think naming bands/artists/song titles is fine. Like you said, if you were quoting lyrics then you would need to seek permission.

I would recommend confirming with the Society of Authors, who have comprehensive guides (some free, some paid) on Copyright and Permissions.
