Word count

Hi.

Can anyone tell me the average word count required for a YA Fantasy Fiction?

I have read conflicting data regards to this, and I would like to know, so I can see if I need to chop or add before I start re-writing.

Any ideas?

Word count seems to be hugely subjective. I have read about a dozen different guidelines which say different things. If I could put my oar in without wanting to sound like a snob, I'd say however many words you've written is the right amount for the book. Redrafting cuts down on an awful lot of fluff (and I'm into my second year of redrafting on my current project. It's about half as long as it was!)

Thanks Tony,

I was getting a little worried there for a minute. I've looked at books in my genre, and they vary considerably, so I feel a bit better now.

And the process of re-drafting doesn't seem so daunting now, I do hope I'll find it as enjoyable as you have.

Good luck with your book aswell.
