Burb of new book

I was rather unsure of what the plot of this book will be, but once I found a suitable one I wrote out a blurb to keep me on track. Just wondering what you think of it.

“I reckon that we’re all made up of labels. We can’t see them, but they’re there, as clear as day for others to see. We’re covered in them; written like invisible tattoos under our skin. It’s how people know how to view us, act around us. And now since the world calls us by these labels and has ideas about how we should act, we start copying them. In my case, I must have GAY written all over myself – it’s the word everyone seems to call me, in different variations. And we believe the words others spit at us. But surely these labels don’t define us. Yes, I could be gay, but there’s so much more to me than a word.”

Everybody has secrets, and Matt Turner is no different. Except he has a particular secret he can’t even admit to himself. He’s gay.

Unsure of his sexuality in the midst of his parents’ rocky relationship and his own precarious mental health, he struggles with his feelings towards his ex-girlfriend, Julia, and his secret, low-key crush, Ben, that he only allows himself to think of late at night.

But one event at a house party causes his midnight feelings to come into bright light. Scared and unsure, Matt buries his feelings as deep as he can, meaning that when things start to unravel, he’s caught in a lie between his head and his heart.

And as friends start to get hurt, Matt soon realises he’s standing on a precipice between the life he wants, and reality, causing him to decide whether or not to step back into the lies or jump into the truth.

He has to get things straight with himself.

A coming-of-age story of fear, acceptance and being confident in whom you are; of navigating the world of labels and stereotypes and the pressures put on you by family and friends. And realising that it’s OK to be who you are, unashamedly.
