Four Square Walls

He sits

He stares

Four square walls

A measurement of his life

If only, if only

Worked too hard

A sudden rush

Paralysed

No sound

Speechless

He sits and stares

Four square walls

I see a lot of sadness in this. A sadness that sums up the life of many people. Everyone has their dream of what life should be, but it rarely materialises because life gets in the way. Before we know it we are old. The years have passed and we have done everything except what was really important to us. We not only shatter our own lives, but the lives of others inextricably connected to our own. There is no second chance, only the knowledge that we could have done better - we could have been true to ourselves and those nearest to us.

I like it! I especially like the way you don't spell everything out but leave your readers to work out the backstory of how this man came to be sitting and staring at four walls etc. Unlike a previous writer I didn't see this as a lost romance, rather as the inevitable effects of age.
