The Golden(d) Journey

Hi guys, my name is Carlos, and today, I am here to tell you a story which touched my heart very deeply.

Diego, 9 years old, dark brown, brilliant eyes, skinny and fragile body, full of live and energy combined with an enormous curiosity. Was born in an extremely conservative family in Argentina, not the best country to born, very dangerous and unbelievable poor. He has just moved from his home country to Europe.

What a huge change. Despite the fact that, due to lack of communication, he finds himself back track from the 6th year to the 3rd grade, every seems to be perfect, dad “the dictator” has a new job and he is at school learning really fast that completely new language. But, something still remains the same; his lovely parents have made a bubble, or kind of a “perfect world” to keep him “safe” from the real one. There is no room to breathe, for imagination, to go out, to make friends or to have a girlfriend of course, there is no freedom. He is a prisoner of his parents’ tiny mentality, everything around him are prohibitions and restrictions.

What can you expect from such childhood? Numerous frustrations, curiosities, questions without answers, hungry of freedom and even anger against his family; He can’t wait to get out of his parents’ home and get lost in that massive unknown world to stay away for ever. What wrong did I do to deserve this “life”? please! Is this life? For mum and dad that was love and care. Such a mistake! Year by year he hides everything from them to avoid judgments and punishments.

In his 15th anniversary, he meets a family’s friend. She is everything what he never seen, she has a magnetic personality, the way she talks, moves and that sight capable to glue you for hours without end. She is 35 years older than him and beautiful as a Greek god. She teaches in a primary school. You know that type of person easy to trust? That is the type of person she is.

Week after week she comes to visit the family until one night, she invites him to spend one night in her home to play with her grandchild’s. Yes, grandchild’s, because she is grandma of tree already.

Mum and dad never let him go out for any reason. In this occasion, perhaps for “magical” reasons, they changed their minds. They have trusted his son to Maria for first time. That night she took him and his little four years younger sister.

Dear readers, I am leaving you with Diego now, he will share that night experience to you guys. I have no words to describe such feelings.

I couldn’t believe when my parents said yes to her, I slapped mi face as hard I could to make sure I wasn’t dreaming, what’s wrong with them? I thought. A massive excitement invaded my whole body. That could be the long-awaited freedom, at least for one single night.

We got in to the car and my sweaty hands were shaking, don’t ask me why, cause I don’t know, all I knew was that I would take this opportunity, and this would be the beginning of a new era.

As I write, all that past feelings are coming back to me.

This is a real life experience; all that you read its true, names and places has been changed to keep safe the identity of each character.
