REQUIEM FOR A PANGOLIN
O Pangolin, O Pangolin
We grieve to see you leave
Hunted to extinction
While we are left bereaved
No more to see your humpbacked gait
Nor see that tongue unfurl
No more to watch those rippling scales
You rolled up in a ball.
The scales in fact did seal your fate
Not save you from attack
As superstitious idiots
Thought them aphrodisiac
If Attenborough cannot save you
Then all our hopes are hollow
Extinction looms – where pangolins go
Humanity must follow
