An original ecological disaster thriller. Turf Wars predicts an apocalyptic and challenging future for mankind.
George Craven has run from a failed marriage and an angry ex-wife to a remote Manor in Ingleton, where he blags his way into a job as a gardener's assistant. Deep among the rolling hills of Durham County, George initially finds the obscurity he seeks with a loving and eccentric family, but all is not as it seems.
Five years later: Lady Quail has disappeared, fifteen-year-old Melissa Quail is amorously infatuated with George, and isn’t taking “no” for an answer. When Lord Quail discovers a small patch of white grass on his croquet lawn, George, his newly-promoted head gardener becomes gravely concerned.
George doesn't want to have a new grass virus named after him, nor to be persuaded to attend a COBRA meeting at Westminster. Yet this is just the beginning; everything is about to change as an ecological disaster unfolds and the earth's fragile food chain is torn apart at its very roots.
Turf Wars is the debut novel of Richard T Weston. Originally inspired by his Environmental Sciences teacher in the 70s, Richard wanted to write this complex, plausible novel for four decades but was restrained by his dyslexia. After suffering a TIA in 2015, he tried again using methods he developed himself to defeat his dyslexic challenges.
Written in a unique style, it tells a world-changing story from the perspective of believable characters, none of whom are stereotype heroes. In spite of the problems they face and their prejudices, they manage to come together to form a new community with a single aim – to survive.
Turf Wars is a well-researched book with some very strong female characters that is deserving of its glowing reviews. The unpredictable story challenges the reader to guess the ending - if indeed it is an ending?
While this novel creates fear, there is also some unexpected humour, a touch of mystery and many thrills along the way.
Topics explored:
- · Coming of age
- · Age-gap relationships

"Turf Wars is quite elaborate, it creates a certain flow, it's a very fine story. It should be picked up by a professional publisher."

Lady Quail has disappeared, fifteen-year-old Melissa Quail is amorously infatuated with George, and isn’t taking “no” for an answer.' - you need 'and' after 'disappeared', as you have two different subjects here. The later 'and' is otherwise left hanging without a subject. Lady Q does this, Melissa Q does this, and X does that.
Comma needed after 'head gardener' in the next line. The commas are used like parentheses here and if you open one, you have to close it.
Sounds like a very good read, Richard - congratulations.

Good spot Michelle. I'll change it to George.
Thanks
Hi - interesting synopsis, sounds a fascinating book. I noticed you had two 'he' words in line 2 which doesn't read quite right to me.
