Ages of my characters

I'm working on a novel aimed at children aged 9-12. Should my main character be within that age bracket so that the reader can relate to them more?

Christina/Mark great to hear from writers that are writing for younger audiences. What genres do you both write in?

Thanks for the links Louise, I'll take a look!

My first book is aimed at 13-17 ish (young adults I suppose, though I appreciate that's a wide margin) and all my leading characters are in that age bracket. I agree that younger children probably want to read about older characters but I think once we grow a bit older we like to have at least one character we can relate to directly.

The characters I write about are late teens early twenties and the style I write is for young adults. Hope that helps a bit Gayle.
