If you're working on a Mac I would highly recommend Vellum - it creates beautiful e-books very easily. You pay a one-off fee and can then publish as many books as you like, paperback and e-book formats for all the online platforms.

I've done it too, including CreateSpace print-on-demand service. They have intuitive do-it-yourself guide to follow.
The much-harder work is marketing your work, which unfortunately, I am not savvy. Good luck, however.
I'm not and I've done it. They publish a pretty comprehensive guide to formatting, which is the major pain - such as going through your MS and taking out all the hard returns, which .mobi doesn't like.
