American literature.

What is your favourite American novel, and why do you think it is special?

My favourite is Little Women - Louisa May Alcott.

I love the structure. The brilliant way that Alcott blends many characters into the lives of Amy, Beth, Meg and Jo the protagonist.

My degree is in English and American Lit, and the American part introduced me to a whole other world that hadn't breached the walls of the secondary school system at that time. I don't have favourites - I haven't read enough yet to have those. My second thesis was on Catch-22 and all Heller's works to that date, all of which were excellent books, but if I read them again would I feel the same? Doesn't do to go back, perhaps.
