Anyone else do this?

I find when I'm writing I can't stick to writing one story at a time. I tend to write numerous different stories mostly with different genres at one time. Luckily I don't confuse them but I was wondering if anyone else had this problem and if so if there is a way to keep to writing one story at a time? Thank you :)

Hi A Fox thank you for the advice, at he moment I'm far too young to become a professional writer :( so I write for fun at the moment but to become a professional writer would be a dream come true :) I'll try your advice and see if that helps. Thank you :)

Mmmm. This answer will seem quite mixed as it really all depends on your aims/goals.

If you are just wrting for the love of writing, or just starting out then I see nothing wrong with this. Let your creativeness flow.

If you are trying to write a singular book...then I think you need to recognise your strengths and weaknesses and make a realistic plan. Some writers can write simultaneous stories and have them turn out well, and in a reasonable amount of time. Others cannot. Which are you? Because of the nature of creativity it can be all to easy to say, yeah, just go with the flow. Now there is nothing wrong with that sentiment, but I think applying it exclusively will do you no favours. If you are serious about becoming a professional writer then you do need to treat it like work, and work consistently and hard.

My first book is with my beta readers at the moment, however: When I was writing it I would alternate between writing the prose, and planning/jotting down scenes ect for the sequels. Often these ideas were hinging on events/implications/evolvements of what I was writing in B1. Sometimes words flow like wine, other times its a lot harder and these times were good for note making.

But then I would also have moments, every 6 months or so, when nothing would come. It felt stale. So I would put aside my main work and write a short story. Within these I would play with other genres, techniques ect. After I found that I was sufficiently fresh and could leap back int the book.

Perhaps you would benefit from a pattern like this?

Or perhaps you are flitting between ideas because you haven't yet found THE idea that burns and demands to be written? :)

Good luck, hope this helps!
