Thanks for all the answers :) Considering that I've already written a novel I know the basics, however you insights were helpful.
Oh, and if Adrian's reading list is a bit heavy going, try Wannabe A Writer by Jane Wenham-Jones for light relief. She tells you how she did it and then tells you not to follow her example! But it's a good read.
I think I'm right in saying Elements of Style is American and therefore not completely correct for British English. I think The Oxford Style Manual is our equivalent.
