Is there a way in which I can use more than one tense in my writing?

I read a novel once called Taken (I can't remember who wrote it)...well I say read, I got about a quarter of the way through and had to stop because every chapter the tense changed between third and first person and just got annoying and hard to follow.
Saying that it probably is possible if you're a confident enough writer to pull it off.
The only way I can personally see it working is if one of your characters was telling a part of the story to the other characters, that way you could switch from third person to first person and then back to third when that section is done.
