Chapter length

Is there a guideline of how long should a chapter be? I've researched many books in the genre I enjoy writing and find a wide range of chapter lengths...!

I'm ranging around 6,000 words - is that too much?

Carla,

It very much depends what's taking place in each chapter. Some will be longer, others shorter. Personally I aim for an average of 3,000, but you can't be too precise in each chapter. I agree that some books have short chapters, whilst others are much longer. A matter of choice and suitability for the events in your story, I think.

Not at all. It depends on how much you want to present to the reader..... Sometimes, it is 950 words , sometimes 4000 words.... It just depends on you and the story you are writing!! :) :)
