A Chapter

What is a chapter comprised of? Is it similar to a plot line, only compressed into a neat little package? Is there some sort of formula for a chapter, certain elements and aspects which have to be present or should you judge it on gut feeling?

What are your thoughts on it?

Chapters should advance the plot, storyline and the protagonists growth throughout the novel. Each chapter should contain a dramatic landmark. An event that stands out amongst the other events in that chapter. A vital issue that needs to be resolved later in the novel.

Chapters should be no more than twelve pages. They can be as short as three, four pages in length, but not less than three pages unless it's necessary.

Chapters should have broad themes, yet be strong as a unit.

A chapter should link with the preceding and following chapter.

Chapters should have a dramatic opening. A landmark signpost and end with a cliff-hanger or a hook.

Each chapter should be a water-tight, self-contained episode.

I hope that helps.

Good luck.
