Is it permissible to use a verse from a well known poem as an intro to a story? In fact using a quote from that verse as the title to the story?

Replies

I have written the single verse in question from which I have taken the title as a stand alone comment on the opening page and named the poet. It is early nineteenth century and a very well known poem... There is no mention of the poem in the actual text as the verse in question really speaks for the whole novel. I am so very grateful for the comments.

Always check with the author or publisher to see if the work is still copyright. There is no such defence as ignorance or 'I thought it would be okay'.

If it's a well-known poem, google it with 'copyright' in the question, or look for public domain poetry.

If the title is in quotation marks and referenced it may be acceptable? This provides publicity for the poet, but its probably wise to seek permission. I believe quoting in text is fine if referenced, its done as a matter of course in non fiction so why not in a novel?
