Comparing book lengths

Just thought I would ask;

I have recently finished my first work (in a planned series if three) it is about 85,000 words and is on a shelf being forgot about before I go back to it. In the meantime I have started my second to keep my writing up. It has been roughly planned but is coming up shorter than the first, about 70,000 words, I am about 15,000 in.

What do people reckon? Is varying book lengths a problem, especially with a saga/trilogy as mine is planned to be.

Thanks for your thoughts

I agree, some of my favourite book series are various in lengths, but it achieves the end goal

I don't think it's a problem. The book will be whatever length is needed to tell the story, whether it's longer or shorter than the first doesn't really matter.
