Does anybody know what a connection request means? I've had one but I have no idea what it's all about and I can see no explanation on the site to enlighten me.

You can send this person private messages
It's like Facebook. Click on your name at top right hand, and Dashboard on drop down menu. You'll see your connection request - you can accept or decline.
It's practically a Friend Request. :)
