Hi everyone. I have an idea for a short story and wanted to use some song lyrics or extracts from books in it. I was wondering what the copyright implications are? Thanks.

Thanks for your answers. I think I read somewhere (not sure where) that it was ok to quote a dozen or so words, such as a short phrase or a quotation, without permission, providing you reference it correctly. If this is true, how would I go about referencing for a short story?

You can quote up to 10% of a book *if* you make it clear it was their words not yours (ie giving author name and title of the work)

Song lyrics are different, I think they are far stricter.
