I had a book published and then in re-print several years ago. The publishing company no longer exists. Am I at liberty to update /re-publish the book in a similar format elsewhere as the topic is still relevant to current times?

Thank you so much for taking the time to reply - very helpful. The company didn't go bankrupt but it merged with another and stopped publishing at all, as publishing was just part of the portfolio of services they offered - they were actually a charity.

All publishing rights should revert to you if the publishing company went bankrupt. However, if they were taken over, then the new company would own all the publishing rights you contractually agreed with the previous company. That doesn't stop you from asking the new company to relinquish the publishing rights back to you. They may be willing to do so, as the book has twice been in print.
