Cover letter question.

I've just written my cover letter, so I don't have to worry about it when I'm ready to submit. I just want to know what everyone's opinion is on adding the fact I'm autistic in the 'About me' part of the letter. Would this help the agents if they contact me?

Replies

Thank you all for you replies, I have taken out the fact I'm autistic since it has nothing to do with my writing.

Also Beryl, you comment seems to imply I'm looking down on autistic people, which is not true, seeing as I am autistic.

I agree with Lorraine, Unless being autistic is somehow relevant to your writing, I wouldn't mention it, just as I wouldn't mention being deaf or diabetic. I assume you are writing fiction. If you were writing about being autistic and how it affected your life and work, then it would of course make sense to show that you were writing from personal experience.

Best of luck when you come to submit your work.

I agree with Lorraine, and can see the point being made about not judging, but it is business for them first and foremost. if you were without legs and writing about murder what would be the point of saying "I am a double amputee" it could make them think you are saying hey this might be a good selling point. I might be wrong but I don't think it would be, I am NOT saying that would be your reason for telling them, however, it could make them think you might be difficult to work with so I would stick to the tried and tested. Take a look at youtube I think one UK agent is called Piers Blofeld, he will show you what they are after. worth a look. good luck regards Paul.
