Disqualified competition winners

Would it be OK, having won a competition or an award but subsequently disqualified, to claim to be 'Winner of the X award (later disqualified)'? After all, the disqualification came after the success and the work submitted must have had some merit.

I think it would depend on why you were disqualified.

If you were disqualified because of an honest mistake i.e. you did not read the eligibility requirements and were too old or not really a resident of the country. In those scenarios, you could claim to have won the competition, because based on merit, you did.

But if some form of dishonesty was involved, then I would say definitely not.

That's just my opinion and I think I might be in the minority here.

I would have to agree with Louise. I'm guessing that the prize was later awarded to somebody else, and in that case the winner's claim is rightly theirs.
