I was just wondering if men write romance as opposed to a story where a bit happens to be thrown in on the way? And I'm just as interested to know if men read romance voluntarily? If so, historical, modern or even a bit of erotica (NOT pornography)? As a romance writer, this could impact on what I write next as an experiment. Many thanks for any input/opinions/experiences from men or women.
I wouldn't even offer to write a romance, but I do have relationships in my fantasy/children's novel. Nor would I read a romance, unless as Victoria says, it was in disguise as something else. I don't have anything against the genre but equally it doesn't attract me. Romance isn't interesting - relationships are.
What you appear to suggest is if you want men to read your romance, don't call it romance. Food for thought, definitely.
Oh yes - I nearly forgot - I do write romance - both in its own right and interwoven into other material.
Erotic or pornographic? Two questions... Why delineate? Where would a safe line be drawn?
For general expression that I would (I am slightly surprised to find) apply the bedroom door principle mentioned above... Why? Perhaps I am playing safe? Perhaps a "safe" text is more marketable - or perceived to be?
I am quite capable of writing the most lurid text - but it doesn't usually help develop a plot or character...
On the other hand extreme violence (including sexual violence) - especially in visual media - seems to be 100% acceptable. I find it objectionable that mayhem and slaughter receive minimal reaction while tenderness and passion are taboo... But I do not expect to change the world.
I do include violence in my work - but it is usually extremely short (abrupt) and very relevent to the story - both to characters and plot. Violence is a fact of life but I do not think that it should be glorified.
Then again... Isn't sexuality and sexual activity "part of life"?
I avidly watch "The Big Bang Theory" - to cringe and laugh in about equal measures - I think that the series hits the current socially acceptable level with regard to sex pretty well. One reason I think they get it right is that they show the funny/frustrating side of the whole subject.
I hope these thoughts are also useful
