Editing?

How do you edit?

I edit by printing out one chapter at a time, go through it with a red pen, correct it in my draft and move on. Once that's done, I plan on reading it through to see if it sticks together. I find it hard work (and tedious) but it has to be done. It has got me thinking, though, how do you edit? I might be able to pick up some worthwhile approaches.

It's an interesting experiment to put a page or two of your novel into that free editor and see what it says, but I think actually using that to edit a novel would be a very bad idea.

I just cut and paste the first page of The Hobbit into it and it found:

Two overused words, one cliché, 6 long sentences, a problem with average sentence length and two issues with sticky sentences.

Can I suggest that if this programme loves your work, no human being would!

Please tell me I'm not the only one waiting for the result of the CreateSpace competition associated with the digital age conference of November 3.
