Editing as you go?

I've noticed when I rewrite a page of my work (I often do this as I hate mistakes/marks on my work etc) I sometimes will add/take away sentences/words. Does anyone else do this and can it in fact make my work worse?

I'm sure all of us do, but you can't know if it will make it worse or better until you've gone through your final edit on the work. Then compare it to the first one and check. I believe that it improves, for the better.
