Hi all,
I have a number of stories for children (2 sentences per page at around 20 pages) aimed at 3-5 year olds. They're all rhyming and based on having vivid illustrations. The feedback I've had from children and parents I've read them to has been phenomenal but I'm stuck at a point between whether to send the stories to publishers or plug on trying to find an illustrator who would work for minimal price. What do you suggest?
Thank you Alice that's great
Hi there!
In the UK most publishers of children's picture books will want to see the text only, as they often have their own illustrators or people who they've used before. Most consider it their job to match you with an illustrator.
Have you considered trying to get an agent before you approach publishers? Also, a good tip is to enter any 'writing for children' competitions that you can find, this is how I got my agent.
Writing in rhyme is wonderful but challenging and has to be of a very high standard to get published in today's market, as it is more difficult to translate into foreign languages, and this is where most publishers make their money. (by selling to foreign countries)
Make sure the stories are the best they can be before you send them out. You can always share them in the forums on here and get some valuable feedback.
Hope that helps,
Alice
