Write in whatever way you feel is right for you but I would say that publishers don't like you jumping from third to first person, it can get messy just stick to one perspective per book.
Mmmm I'm going to go against the grain a little here. Third person is very good as a narrative tool, and gives the writer a cinamagraphic control. It's my preferred, as it is with many others. Perhaps your story needs it.
However: If you are using short stories to explore different writing techniques and perfect your skills then persevere.
Try writing some very short, 1kish, SS about charas you would not normally write about. Bold, distinct charas. Put them through different situations, maybe even genres. All in third. Then a final piece, memoir style in first. It's fun, challenging, and you will get to know your charas so well that first person will be easy. Could even apply some post-humous unreliable narrator ;)
I find some stories benefit from being written in the 3rd person, and some are better in the 1st person. Depends what result you want. 3rd person is more distant, less attached, and the outcome is less certain, whereas 1st person is more personal and perhaps, true.
Whichever tense you use, the tense must be consistent.
I'm writing my latest novel in 'the moment.' ie. not 'he sensed' but 'he senses, and that is really hard. But I'm hoping the end product will be worth it.
