Hi Jessica,

If you are writing fiction for children, you might benefit from getting a copy of the Children's Writer's and Artist's Yearbook. This lists all the agencies currently looking for children's books, their submission guidelines and contact details. When you are ready to send your work to an agent, you will need to prepare a one to two page synopsis which gives an overview of the entire plot. Typically an agent will ask for the first three chapters of your novel. You would also need to prepare a cover letter, for advice on how to produce a professional cover letter I would suggest reading: Dear Agent by Nicola Morgan, which I have recently read and it is full of great advice and interesting facts. An agent will usually reply to your submission within four to six weeks but this could be longer for some agencies and there are some who won't reply to you if they do not wish to represent you. Be prepared for rejections though, JK Rowling was rejected by two agencies before she found Christopher Little and then by twelve publishers before Harry Potter was published. The most important thing is not to give up. Good luck!
