How can I trust an Editor...??

I've virtually finished my first ruff draft of a sci-fi Novel. How can I trust an editor with it? Do I have my novel copy written first before passing it to an editor?? Someone has advised me I should copy write it after so I'm a bit confused as to my next step...

Copyright is automatic, Mykie. As soon as you've written the thing, it's copyrighted. You don't actually need to do anything (but you can put the little copyright symbols with your name and the year on the title page if you like).

You can trust an editor not to steal your work, if that's what you mean. Commercial proofreaders and editors are expensive. It would be a good idea if you could get friends or family to help you tidy up spelling and grammar first, before you think of that step.

Maybe find one that has been recommended by someone you can trust.Find out if the person has had a good experience with a particular editor.
