How did you start your novel?

How did you start your novel? Did you steam in Medias Res on the first page, or start somewhere in the middle? Perhaps you started at the end and worked backwards.

I did some research, bought a Victorian C/D Map on the internet then worked on various bits of the story to get a feel for my three main characters and then - opened a new file and re-started from the beginning. If anyone's interested, I shared my work in progress yesterday. Any input would be greatly appreciated

I started from the start, which I'm glad I did so, since the first chapter had changed so many times before I was happy with it.

I had an idea and just started writing.

I guess this is why - during edits - I cut out the entire first chapter to speed things up.
