I've been quoted £75 to get on by a 3rd party but surely there's a cheaper way to get one of these?

Hello Mykie,
I don't know a way of getting a cheaper ISBN, but sometimes it's a case of weighing up whether it's worth getting one or not... I know of a company which decided not to get an ISBN number for their book. Consequently, they are struggling to sell it anywhere. I think you might find it's an unavoidable cost if you want to get your work out there, though if you are self-publishing, check what the deal involves... Is the purchase of the ISBN number included in other publishing costs, or is it a separate fee? You may want to pay for an ISBN number, but you don't want to be paying for it twice.
For your (future) information: By "a thumbs up", I meant clicking on the little "thumbs up" sign below my comment. This serves 2 purposes:
a) The higher the number next to the sign, the more people have liked the comment... and the more likely other people will bother to read it.
b) Giving me a "thumbs up" actually gives YOU 5 points (no points to me for the excellent comment: the mysterious workings of this crazy site!). Once you get to 200 points, you get a free book. (But you only get credited for one TU per day, so it's no good rushing around giving them to every comment you see just to accumulate points.)

- Hope some of this helps.
