Flat-characters have their uses. A one dimensional flat-character could become a rounded-character if you have good reason to flesh them out. I have made sure all my characters are fleshed out by the middle of my novel.

In the novel I'm trying to get published now there are ten characters, one of which is the protaganist and five of which are the supporting characters. I like to think that they are all rounded in that you know a bit about how they think and can second guess how they would react to certain situations.

In the one I'm writing at the moment there are seven main characters whose stories weave into the sub plots and a host of characters that pass through. I'm hoping that the main characters will all be rounded but I have a lot of work to go yet to make that happen.
