In my current novel, I have five main rounded characters and about five semi-rounded bit-players who each fulfill a particular, specific role. There are also a host of unrounded walk-ons plus about three main characters who I need to go back and re-hash as they don't "feel" right to me yet (Merlin, King Arthur and Morgan Le Fay, ironically).
I look forward to my editing... I have to keep on telling myself that as I would not approach it otherwise. :)
10 but only 5 are important it. I agree, I don't like reading books where there are lots of characters in it.
It's a fluid figure for me, as I keep killing them off! Probably half a dozen at any one time. It's a series though, six books so there is a lot of story to involve them in. And I mourn each one that dies...
