Waste of time and money in my book (sorry - no pun intended). If someone's going to steal your work, and like Simon says it's very unlikely, they'd do it, copyrighted or not.
Anything written in the UK is automatically copyright of the author without the need for registration. The US is different, but plagiarism is far less of a problem than ebook pirating, I'd have thought.
Unless you're self-publishing I don't think registering the copyright is really that necessary - especially since by writing it, you already own the copyright. Registering it acts as proof should you take action against someone, but for most writers that's not going to happen, I know agents and editors tend to discourage it - it's easier for a publishing company to do it down the line when the book comes out.
But, as I said, self-publishing is a different game about which I know very little, so can't comment!
I always keep my novel on a computer that has no internet and back it up each week.
