How should I try and get my book published?

I'm coming round to finishing the first edit of my first novel, and am kind of at a loss as to what to do next. Should I start sending the first three chapters to agents now? Wait until the whole thing is finished and start wheeling it off to publishers, or self publish it for free as an ebook on Kindle?

I know this question has probably been asked many times before, but if anyone's got any advice at all that would be really helpful.

Cheers for the advice Mark. Sadly don't have nearly enough cash for the editing service, it's a touch outside of my student price range, but I'm leaving the book for a bit so I can go back to it with a fresh head.

I'd wait until you've absolutely completely finished it. Otherwise, you're bound to miss something. Guaranteed! Bash out every possible edit, stick it on a top shelf for a few months, go back to it, edit it again...

You could also, if you've got a bit of cash lying around, use the midway or structural edit service on this site, which was hugely helpful to me when I got to where you are now.
