Legal advice on copyright and index

My publishers are threatening to publish my book before I have finished writing the index. It is an academic book and the index is a complicated one that will take a few weeks to complete and is essential to the use of the book. They refuse to delay publication by the necessary couple of weeks, which is plainly unreasonable. I have said that I will not accept authorship of a book that is published in my name unless I am given time to complete the index, as it is an essential element of the authorship of the book. I have said they can back out of the publishing contract if they wish; am I bound by the contract if I want to back out and get the book published elsewhere?
