Mature Authors

Is it ever too late? Can a mature (not old) person dare to dream of becoming a successful author?

Stieg Larsson published his trilogy - The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo, after he died.

Write whilst you have a pulse and are still breathing and enjoy every minute of the journey. Life is for living and it's never too late to do anything.

I'm in my mid 50s, a novice in the writing world, and think of writing as the longest ahead of me.

Have fun!

Agree with Paul. Let's be clear, a publisher (or Agent) is in the business to make money. If they catch an author young it gives them a longer-term income. Having said that, I know an author (Jack Sheffield) who wrote a humourous book when he retired about his experiences as a teacher. He is now on his 7th or 8th book for Corgi Publishers.

If a publisher thinks it will sell, they will publish you - whatever age you are.

Agree with all the positive thoughts and suggestions here James. One thing to be aware of though; there is in society in general and especially in media circles, a cult of youth. Many agents/publishers are looking for the 'New, young author'. Any agent or publisher worth their title should ignore age, sex, race, location, and anything else you care to mention and concentrate on the quality of the piece in front of them.

Good luck and keep on doing.
