I've just read that J.K. Rowling has written a crime novel under the false name of Robert Galbraith.. Is this going to be a new thing where writers hide behind a name for the other gender or has it been around for a while?

I read that J K Rowlings detective novel under the false name of Robert Galbraith, has only sold 1500 hardbck copies. Whether the book is good or bad, leakng her real name will boost sales. It is a good marketing ploy and will guarantee the novel is a best-seller.
Regarding authors, especially women authors using false or male names.
I like the quote below.
'For most of history, Anonymous was a woman.' Virginia Woolf.
Yeah sexism has been rather limiting.
Look at the Bronte sisters or Tiptree.
P D James is a woman, too.
