Novel or Novella?

How many words would you have to write to make it either a novel or a novella? I am currently working on what I consider a novella as it will only have 7 chapters but as yet I'm not sure how many words. Any ideas?

There are no set rules. People consider 'The old man and the sea' a novel. I know Arrow is very lenient with lengths.

Thanks, I guess I will be doing a novella unless I get really carried away.

Novella's are usually less than 20k words while novels are at least 40k depending on genre. Non-fiction is typically shorter than fiction at between 40k to 60k, but fiction tends to be 70k and above.

I don't think it has to do with the number of chapters.
