I keep reading people talking about this, and I was wondering if it really matters what the novel is typed up on, at the moment I'm using OpenOffice and was wondering if it'll be better if I got something else.

I write in either Word or Open Office (depending on where I am) - I love the idea of writing with a pen, or better still a typewriter, but I just can't keep up the flow. I don't think any word processor is necessarily better than any others.
If you think the software will improve your writing or even do it for you the answer is no.
Word/ OpenOffice/ or Libre if you use Ubunto is good enough. I use Google Docs which is just Google's version of Word.
But if you want to, check out free software made for writing Novels/Movies try RoughDraft via: http://www.pcworld.com/downloads/file/fid,169939/description.html
or the free version of Celtx via: www.celtx.com
You can import your stuff into either of these and see if they are a help or a hindrance.
To be honest, I think much of the 'Writing Software' is a bit gimmicky, to try and suck money out of those who are keen to write, but not sure how to start.
I write mine in open office, and I think it is fine. As would writing it in Word
I have heard that some of these applications help you keep track of certain events, such as who is in a room, how long an event has taken. But this is all data that you can store and keep track of in a spreadsheet in open office.
